FICTION Born in Mexico and based in New York, Del Toro is the author of numerous published works, including novels, fantasy, and a collection of chronicles about the aftermath of September 11. Her latest novel straddles both sides of the border with a fast-paced plot laced with social commentary. Middle-aged journalist–turned–private investigator Inés Carrasco is a woman with a shady past. As she traces a charm stolen from an Argentinian Dirty War victim to New York and Mexico, Carrasco wends her way through corruption and bioterrorism. The mystery of the pendant leads the protagonist further into a dark world involving a corrupt filmmaker (famous for her work on the Juárez femicides) and her licentious novelist lover. Carrasco’s greatest challenge is to save the life of the novelist’s rebellious daughter, endangered by both a dysfunctional family and the predators of young Mexican women. Del Toro’s novel is smart and sometimes self-consciously intelligent. The plot twists and turns through the crime-ridden world of Mexico City and beyond, weaving in images and sardonic commentary on sexism and the politics of corruption.
